Inspiration

Alisha Kashyap, MPH, is a fourth-year medical student at McGovern Medical School. Growing up with an older sister who struggled with acne and eczema, Alisha saw firsthand how skin conditions can affect a child’s self-esteem. Inspired to make a difference, she began volunteering at Camp Discovery as a cabin counselor during college. One camper in particular, Lily, left a lasting impression on her, motivating Alisha to create a project that would spread awareness about the benefits of camps for kids with skin conditions.

Alanna Bree, MD, is a pediatric dermatologist and founder of the nonprofit organization Made A Masterpiece, which provides a supportive community for children with skin conditions. She also founded Camp Dermadillo, a one-day introductory camp where kids and their families can experience the joy and community of camp. Alisha and Dr. Bree have collaborated since the beginning of Alisha’s medical school journey. When Alisha approached Dr. Bree with the idea for a book, they combined their experiences and vision to create Loving the Skin You’re In at Camp Dermadillo, a keepsake celebrating self-confidence, community, and fun.

The book was published in February 2025 and distributed in March 2025 at Camp Dermadillo, alongside Crayola coloring pencils for the campers. Alisha and Dr. Bree plan to expand distribution to all Camp Discovery locations starting this summer, sharing the story and message with even more children.
